Current Art Stuff (A Sort Of WIP Wednesday)

I debated not even having a WIP Wednesday, but then I decided even though I don’t have a ton of actual art to share, there are a few things I’d like to talk about! So really, a few of these things are even in pre-WIP stage, where I’m still just working on concepts for projects.

One of my biggest goals this year is to find a direction for my art. I feel like while I love creating, I don’t really have a sense of DOING anything with my art. I like to draw portraits. I like to make paintings. But I feel like I’ve just been bouncing around from individual project to individual project with no real goals for my art. And I’d like to change that! I will still absolutely be making portraits, paintings, and probably lots in between. But I want to give myself a bit more focus for the year, with an actual intention for my art as opposed to my “let’s just draw something” mentality I’ve been rolling with up until now.

FOCUS #1:

Sketch more!! Seriously, I am awful at sketching. I bought a new sketchbook in mid-2014, and there are maybe ten pages filled in. Three of which are from this year. Oy. I really need to work on just sitting down to sketch, without a massive project in mind.

margot meanie mary doodles
Two sketches from this year – fellow blogger Margot Meanie, and a quick cartoon-ish sketch of Mary Doodles while catching up on her YouTube vids!

FOCUS #2:

Drawing without a reference! This heavily ties in to my above focus of sketching more. Every time I sit down to sketch, self doubt always kicks in and screams I can’t possibly draw anything without a reference photo! I NEED to work on getting over that hump. Especially as I know, YES, I CAN draw without a direct reference. I actually have a super top secret idea I’m working on right now for a personal comic, and I can’t wait to get it going. You guys here will definitely be privy to the process – it’s really only super top secret from my family. And since they don’t read my blog, I can share it all here, muahahahaha! Anywho, you’ll be hearing lots more about it.

Other projects? I need to finish my Neil Gaiman portrait, as well as the painting for my hubs and I’ve got some plans to do a Victorian steampunk piece, just for funsies. I think I’d like it to eventually be a painting, but I’ll probably start out with a graphite drawing to get it all down first.

gaiman portrait
Hoping to get this finished tomorrow!

aurelia
I’ve been ignoring this piece, as the entire bottom half of her body needs to be redone when I paint….not looking forward to that. But I need to suck it up, and get some more work done on it!

That’s what I’ve got on my art plate for now – what are you working on lately?

WIP Wednesday

havengullichWIP

I’m about 90% done this bookmark, which will be a Christmas gift for a friend. It’s been so much fun to paint, and I’m loving learning more about using watercolors. I haven’t decided if I’m going to paint a background color or not. The Magic card has an ochre yellow background, but I don’t really like it. So, to leave it white, or pick another color? Thoughts?

bookmarks

I sketched out two more bookmarks to paint just for fun! Sorry they’re so hard to see; I tend to sketch REALLY lightly when I’m going to be painting, so I had to fiddle with the levels in Lightroom just to see this much! On the left, a happy little dancing Groot, because who doesn’t love dancing Groot, and on the right a Moriarty bookmark. He is my absolute favorite part of Sherlock, so he definitely needed a bookmark.

commission

This is the very very beginning stages of a commission I just received over the weekend! So this is a little peek into my process – my first step is to do a really rough outline sketch to place everything in for proportion and size. Next up I’ll start revising and adding in detail, then move on to shading.

ten

I’ve had Doctor Who, especially Ten, on my mind lately, so I sketched this up to paint last night just for fun. Very small, the whole paper is 6″ x 8″, but I like painting small.

bumpinthenight

I sketched this up last night too, after my daughter woke up in the night (definitely based on her). I’m quite pleased with it as it’s 100% out of my head with no reference. I still get nervous drawing stuff that way! But I like how this turned out. It’s very rough, and I can’t decide if I want to revise it to paint, or just leave as a sketch for now. I really need to save my pennies to get a set of Copic markers as I think they would be perfect for it!

plush doctors

This project has taken up most of my crafting time this week. I’ve been working on stitching some plushes as Christmas gifts, and these Doctors are my first attempt! Ten was the the first one I ever made, and though he has some flaws I love him. My stitching is already neater for Eleven – he just needs to be stuffed, sewn shut, and have his details added! These were purchased patterns, but I’m working on making my own patterns for other characters, and animal plushes too.

I actually have a few more drawings and things started, but they are gifts for people so I’m keeping them under wraps. After Christmas they’ll be a giant art/craft dump post with them.

What are you making lately?

One Week In

Well, it’s almost a week into the new year and for once I don’t feel like time is getting away from me and I’m getting nothing accomplished. Just the opposite! I’ve been steadily working away on my first goal of 2014 – getting this blog revamped. I’ve hired a coder after making the decision to go big or go home with this. I’m at the point where if I’m going to put in the time and effort to make my blog feel more like me, I should put in the extra mile and make it EXACTLY what I want. Which needs a custom layout. Which I can’t do. Hence some hired help! So now I’m hard at work planning it all out, doing sketches galore, drawing up some illustrations I want incorporated (see above for planning/sketching/drawing shenanigans), and making mock-up page layouts in Photoshop.

Other than blog work, I have a new piece of artwork finished (but not photographed yet), and am re-opening commissioned portraits for 2014! My little miss had a sleepover at Mimi’s last night, so I have the whole day all by myself! You know you’re a mom when grocery shopping by yourself feels like a vacation. . .but it has been great to spend most of an entire day dedicated to my personal projects. I can get so much done!

I’ll still be posting while working on the blog revamp, but I’m really excited to start some new series once the new layout is launched. Hope your week treats you well!

Christmas Wrap-up & Handmade Gifts

Did you know there is a difference between handmade and homemade? I learned a couple years back that handmade refers to items or things while homemade refers specifically to foods. Fun fact of the day!

I hope everyone’s holiday was excellent – ours was as usual. Busy, but wonderful. I love to have a couple days completely filled with family, friends, and food!

Every year, I always try and make presents for people. I grew up hand making presents for people as long as I can remember. My mum and grandparents still have paper ornaments I made when I was three. I still remember making cinnamon dough ornaments with my mum to give as gifts. It’s something that has always been extremely important to me, and therefore it’s something I want to pass along to my daughter. Since she was a year old she has been making presents for people and I hope she grows up enjoying it!

For her gifts this year, we did a combination of photo gifts, and ornaments. My family loves photos, so these are always a winner.

DSC_0023

DSC_0024

DSC_0003 (2)

These were incredibly simple to make. We sat down with watercolors and salt to make the backgrounds. Then she looked through photos of her and Daddy and picked her favorite, and of her and Mimi and picked her favorite. For Mimi’s gift I did a little ‘interview’ with her about her Mimi (what Mimi likes to do, her favorite thing to do at Mimi’s house, etc) and wrote it up under the photo. Then I snagged two shadowbox frames from Target, assembled them together, and voila! Perfect gifts from a toddler.

DSC_0026

For the ornaments I made a cinnamon dough, and we rolled and cut out shapes together with cookie cutters. Then I used got out some ABC stamps and she helped me stamp the letters on. Once they were all dry (a few days later), she painted them (I did the letter outline in white of course). The little ones were strung up as garland for our living room, and the big ones will be gifts. As you can see, I didn’t turn the snowman quite enough as he was drying so he got a bit curled. Adds character right? Right.

DSC_0011

As for my handmade gifts, I did some drawings and paintings for friends.

And also some Doctor Who bookmarks! I definitely made one for myself as well – who wouldn’t crack up seeing that face sticking out of your book?! On the backs of each bookmark are the words ‘Property of (insert recipients name) written out in Gallifreyan (aka the Doctor’s language for those non-Whovians out there). I found this awesome Gallifreyan translator on DeviantArt; it’s pretty fabulous.

whobookmarks

And being somewhat of a crazy cat lady, I made a couple new toys for our two kitties. Again, very simple. I cut out two pieces of felt and sewed a button and a bit of detailing on, then stitched around the edge, stuffed ’em full of catnip and sewed the rest shut! Pardon the wobbly stitching – I don’t hand stitch things often. One of my kitties could care less about them, but our other one is OBSESSED with them! He wrestles, chews, throws, and generally tries to destroy them to get at the catnip. It’s hilarious.

I WANTS IT!!!

As for my homemade gifts (aka yummy treats) tune in for my Holiday December Baking post on Monday!

HOW IS IT NOVEMBER ALREADY?!

I don’t know where the time goes. I blinked and it was October, blinked again and it’s already a week into November. But I have been busy busy! Mostly with art. My muse has apparently taken full time residence with me, which I am 100% okay with. I’ve been getting tons done, and even more exciting, I’m loving the work I’m doing! I know that sounds a little silly, but there is nothing like finishing a piece and being proud of what you’ve done. Plus, seeing my skills improve in my drawing is such a good feeling.

Unfortunately, I can’t post TOO much of what I’ve been drawing here as they are mostly Christmas presents for people! But I can post a few, so here they are.

DRAWtoberfest The Kiss
‘The Kiss’
Drawn for a twitter sketch party I was partaking in (#DRAWtoberfest, at the time).

DSC_0003 (3)
Finally finished this commission! Client decided on adding the phrase at the bottom, and while it was originally going to be a wedding present for her soon-to-be wife, she decided she can’t wait and is giving it to her for Christmas instead!
(Note: I received permission from the client to post this on my blog.)

DSC_0032 (2)
The final piece of wall art for my daughter’s big girl room upgrade (which I am SO excited for! Only another month until the big redo!).

DSC_0010 (3)
Fellow blogger Polly of This Enchanted Pixie was kind enough to let me draw an adorable photo of her daughter in this wonderful handmade knit hat! I always feel odd asking people if I can draw their photos, but so far no one has thought I’m a crazy weirdo. I’m quite proud of this piece, as that hat was a big challenge but I’m pleased with the result!
(Note: I received permission from Polly to post this on my blog and other social media.)

DSC_0002 (2)
And lastly, this piece of the AMAZING a capella group, Pentatonix. I am REALLY proud of this piece as it turned out exactly as I was visualizing in my head. I’m especially happy with how Kevin turned out (all the way to the right, with the cello). I was expecting him to be the hardest to draw given that his features were heavily shadowed, and not only did he come together the easiest, but I LOVE the shading! And in case being happy with this piece wasn’t enough, I posted it on Twitter and Scott Hoying (fourth in the from the left) saw it, and faved it! Cue nerd-gasm of amazingly talented famous person seeing my artwork of him and his own band, and liking it. Day. Made.

Also, my hubby, being fabulous, agreed to let me do a MAJOR splurge for my birthday next April so now I have a VIP TICKET to go see Pentatonix which means I CAN GET THE DRAWING SIGNED!
Needless to say, me and my art have been having a grand ole time lately. And so far, it seems to be holding strong!
And now, a shameless plug for my art:
If you like what you see, please head over to my Facebook page and give it a like! Pencil and Paper
Commissions will be re-opened sometime in January 2014, so keep it in mind if you are looking for a one-of-a-kind gift.

I think I’ll be giving blogging the backseat for a bit, at least until after the holidays. This is crunch time for me to get presents made, and half of what I make I can’t share online. Which also applies to most of the fun projects and crafts I’ll be doing with my little miss. Lately I’ve been scouring other blogs for inspiration on what to blog about since I don’t have any particular projects I can share lately. So I’ll still be around, just on a smaller scale than my normal three posts a week. I’m thinking about a re-vamp in 2014. . .we’ll have to see what I have time for. See you around blog land!

A Throwback Thursday

Do you remember my post about my art from awhile back? Well, luckily my mom is absolutely fabulous and has saved basically ALL of my childhood art. So we trekked into my Grandmother’s attic searching through boxes of my old art so I can show you these gems:

DSC_0049 (2) DSC_0050
Yay for some Sailor Moon love! I was obsessed back then. . .

Some of my first ever ‘serious’ drawings, by which I mean I had taken a real interest in drawing at this point. These are all from when I was 11. So much fun to go back and look!

Currently, I’ve got three works going – first is this commission for two lovely ladies. It’s going to be a wedding present from the woman on the left to her soon-to-be wife!

DSC_0049

Then I have my just-for-fun piece. It’s a montage/poster of Pentatonix (the most AMAZING a capella group ever – go YouTube them immediately if you’ve never heard of them; you will not be disappointed!) My refs for this one were all screen grabs I took from their Radioactive video with Lindsey Stirling. I just loved the costumes in it, and that they all look totally badass! New life goal once it’s finished: someday meet them so they can sign it.

DSC_0044

And then I just started a new piece for a contest on DeviantArt. The contest is called ‘Nightmares’ and if my piece goes according to plan it will be my first ever self-portrait. . .and there will be spiders. Freaking out a little bit about drawing them as I truly get uncomfortable just looking at pictures of them. AHHHHHH. *Deep breaths* I can do it!

So with all of that, plus some wall art paintings for my daughter’s room, I have some serious art on my hands this week! Wouldn’t have it any other way.

Until next time,

Latest Arts and Crafts

I spent my free time last week working on many different projects. I started five new art projects, and even got a few crafty projects going too. Unfortunately, I can’t post a single one of the three drawings and two paintings I’ve started! They are all Christmas gifts/commissions for people, and while there is no guarantee they’ll see them on my little blog here, it is a possibility I’m not willing to risk. I’d hate to ruin a surprise present, especially a present that a client is giving to someone else. So just know I’ve got lots of art going, and will probably have a giant art dump post sometime after the holidays!

However, I can post my latest finished commission, as it has already been given! This was an anniversary present for the client’s parents. I had SO much fun working on this one; the reference photo was just so fabulously retro. And I liked the challenges it presented – mainly the bouquet of flowers and the lace of the veil. And bonus, I’m quite pleased with the outcome of both!

DSC_0034 (2)
Size is 8×10 inches, all graphite pencil.

As for crafts, I finally (half) sorted through my giant steamer trunk full of clothing and started picking out some shirts to use for my t-shirt quilt. I had so many old tees in there that I was saving for some reason or another, and finally decided to begin the process of getting the quilt going. I still need a bunch more before I’m quilt-ready, but I’m glad to at least have a start.

DSC_0022
It’s going to be a tribute to my geekery. I can’t wait!

And not wanting to waste the fabric on the back of the shirts, I set to cutting up lots and lots of t-shirt yarn for bracelet/anklet making. I love t-shirt yarn bracelets, and have some plans to make some gifts out of it too. Yay for some upcycled jewelry!

DSC_0020
T-shirt yarn! I still have an earthy green and a grey one to cut up.

Oh, and remember that $2 chalkboard I got at a yardsale? Finally got that up. . .I still want to paint the border, but haven’t yet decided what color. It’s up in the front entryway as the first thing you see when you walk into my apartment. I definitely need some practice with my chalkboard lettering, and getting the chalk to have a smoother look, but for my first attempt I’m pleased with it. I just love that quote, too. I plan to change the board with the seasons/holidays and this was the perfect quote for the current time of year. Still summer, but you can feel it slipping away with every day that passes. . .

DSC_0014

This week is going to be filled with some house chaos – finally starting all the home redos I’ve been wanting to do and basically put off out of laziness. Better late than never! Keep an eye out for the first post on my room redos – it’ll be up this week.

And lastly, I have finally remade a DeviantArt account. I had one for a couple years before I had my little girl, but as you know from my earlier art post, I took about a two and a half year break from art, and let my account lapse. So now, I’d like to make a new one there. I love the community aspect it provides, and it can be a constant source of inspiration when I get down about art. Nothing like drooling over other artist’s work to make me want to improve my own skills. I’ve added a new button at the bottom if you’d like to connect with me on DA!

My Open Sketchbook

I wanted to use this post to display some of my own artwork (old and new!), and give you a little insight to me and my art. Lately I’ve been hard at work on commissions for people, as well as some personal portraits of my own. I figured I’d give a little rundown on my history with drawing.

I began drawing when I was 11. I was a rather geeky 11 year old (who turned out to be a rather geeky adult). At that age I was obsessed with Pokemon, Zelda, and especially Sailor Moon. My best friend was really into drawing Pokemon, and I’d always liked drawing, so I started drawing some Sailor Moon characters (my personal favorite – Sailor Venus. She’s still my fave!).

DSC_0007 (2)
The Legend of Zelda: Windwaker fanart circa 2003.

Looking back ay my old drawings cracks me up. No sense of proportion, bold outlines – classic stuff. But hey, gotta start somewhere! Sometime during my freshman year in high school I made the switch from drawing anime to drawing more realistic people. I think what prompted me was the Lord of the Rings movies. Me and my buds were heavily into LoTR. Posters covered my walls, I had the action figures. And somewhere along the lines I started drawing my favorite cast members (usually Elijah Wood; he was definitely my celeb crush back then). That progressed to a real enjoyment drawing and capturing people’s expressions in portraits, and I just kept going!

DSC_0006   drogo

Ten years makes a difference it seems!

I went to art college for one year, and it was amazing. To sum up, I made the decision not to go back for all the wrong reasons, but it all turned out okay in the end. I love the life I have now, and wouldn’t change it for a thing. When my hubby and I decided we wanted a baby, I was just getting back into the swing of art again after taking a rather long hiatus from it after college. While pregnant, I did keep drawing, but close to the end of my pregnancy I stopped completely. Becoming a mom consumed me for the first year of my daughter’s life. And it wasn’t in a bad way. I just couldn’t get enough of my beautiful little girl; I didn’t want to miss a single thing she did, any expression on her face, any sound she made. I drank in every aspect of her. But around her first birthday I began to get restless. Eventually, I realized I needed more than just ‘being a mom’. I needed my own hobbies and activities back. And art was always such a big part of me. So I began drawing again, and haven’t stopped since. I’ve only recently begun sharing my art online again, and opened up commissions. I’m confident enough with my skill again that I’m proud to share it, as opposed to wanting to hide it! FYI, if you’re interested in a commission, check out my Facebook page, Pencil & Paper, or email me at kaylynyman@yahoo.com.

DSC_0055    DSC_0018 (2)
A just for fun drawing of one of my friends and her son. The second was a piece just for fun too, but the woman loved it so much she bought it from me!

My drawing style doesn’t really follow a specific technique. Unless ‘winging it’ counts as a style, in which case that’s mine. I usually start with the facial features (eyes mainly, but sometime the nose first) and sometimes I start with something else entirely! When it comes to shading, I usually do things pretty routinely (click below image.)

Ian WIPS montage

I usually follow that pattern, but not always. Hair used to be the bane of my existence in the drawing world. It overwhelmed me. So many strands, so much movement; I didn’t know where to begin. Now, I have completely embraced hair. I’ve stopped looking at it as a whole, and started viewing it like a face – something to break down into individual pieces and draw. When I draw hair it takes on more of a graphical quality than an ultra realistic one, but I like it. It’s nice to now enjoy something I used to loathe – such an accomplished feeling!

DSC_0007
Hair like this would have crushed me a couple years ago. Now, it’s a challenge that I love finishing!

Nowadays I use drawing as a way to relax, but also as a way to challenge myself. Those sound conflicting, but they mesh together well. When I just want to chill and lose myself in art, I’ll grab some tea and work on a piece that isn’t too hard for me. But when I want a challenge I’ll purposely select a reference picture with something I know I’ll find difficult – a clothing texture perhaps, or a difficult pose. It all depends on my mood. Lately, for my personal pieces, I’ve been really picky about references that have expressions I really want to capture. I also think I want to start working more on full body poses instead of just head and shoulders ‘bust’ type portraits.

Why people portraits? I just find the human face fascinating. As different as people are, I find when I’m drawing so many things become similar. The curve of an eye, or lips. The subtleties between each person is what makes them unique – I love to try and capture that. And I love the lines of the face. Profile shots are one of my absolute favorite; the continuous curving line from the top of the forehead all the way down to the neck is just beautiful.

In my spare time I like to oil paint. I’m incredibly slow at it, but I love it!

DSC_0012
Some more Legend of Zelda fanart. I started this piece back in 2012, and every few months do a little more work on it. Lately I’ve had no time for painting!

DSC_0010
My hubs requested this piece – she’s a character from a game called League of Legends. I haven’t touched it in months. . .I should really get on that!

If you’re an artist, what medium do you favor? And if you’re not as into art, what do you do to unwind, or challenge yourself?

Doodlebook

My latest crafting project is one for my daughter. I saw this on Pinterest one day, and thought it was a great idea!

1b582d8f034ab713e1e0d97c8fba71e4

(Here’s the link to original blog post on ‘All For the Boys’. http://www.allfortheboys.com/home/2013/2/18/surviving-sick-days-diy-dry-erase-book.html)

Here’s mine for my little girl!

DSC_0012

DSC_0013

At family gatherings I asked everybody for a photo of them to use in a special project for Ellie. They happily obliged, and I went work. I booted up Photoshop and first made all my photos black and white. Then I reduced the opacity on them to about 60%, so the black marker would really pop. Just print them out and slip them in a clear plastic sleeve. I used super low print quality to save on ink (hence the white lines across the photos) and printed on plain printer paper too. I’m thinking next time I update the photos I’ll add everyone’s name to the pages too (Mommy, Daddy, Mimi, etc.) She knows who they are, but she’s really starting to learn her letters, and that would be a great visual aid!

DSC_0014
Eraser cloth and marker storage.

When it came time to cover the binder, I debated sewing an actual sleeve for it. . .for about 45 seconds. I really went the lazy route with this craft and decided gluing would be much less effort. So, armed with my hot glue gun, I got to work. The material is a vintage sheet I got at a yard sale for $1.00. (I have a habit of snagging vintage sheets at yard sales since I love the patterns. . .my closet is rapidly filling up). I hastily cut out a (very uneven) rectangle to cover the binder and glued it down. Then, I cut out a nice even piece to fit over the inside so it looks (halfway) pretty! Note I did not hem any edges at all – I stuck with purely hot glue for this project, and I didn’t cut the squares big enough to fake a hem using folds with glue, whoops. The pen and eraser cloth pockets were made by the same method – cut out a piece of fabric and hot glue all the edges down! Works quite efficiently!

DSC_0016

For the cover, I ‘hemmed’ the title piece with hot glue – folding over the edges and hot gluing them down so you have a (roughly) even rectangle to write on. I found a font I liked (it’s called Pea Ellie Bellie – check out my Pinterest board here for a link to download it!) and free-handed the lettering onto the fabric with a pencil – believe it or not you can actually erase pencil from fabric. Then I traced over it with a Sharpie, and glued it to the cover! Done!

DSC_0015
I made it for my daughter to play with, I swear. . .but my hubby always said he wanted to be a pirate!

Total cost of this project for me was $3.00 – I had to purchase the clear sleeves for the paper. My mum had a three ring binder for me to use, and I had everything else. I suppose the cost of printer ink is in there too somewhere. But it’s easy and cheap, and I like that as she get’s older we can update the photos, or even add new things in there for her to draw on! It’ll be great for car rides in another year or so – I guess whenever I trust her with a dry erase marker unsupervised!

Launch Day!

I’ve finally made my first foray into the blogging world! And I’m pretty darn excited about it. Seeing’s how this is my first post on my brand spankin’ new blog I figured I’d give you a little taste of things to come. To get to know me personally a bit better, feel free to venture to the About Me section and take a look around!

I love art. Expect to see lots of artwork posted. Some will be my own – currently I’ve been hard at work on some commissioned pencil portraits. But in my free time I also enjoy oil painting. I love to browse other artist’s work too – I’m constantly printing out little images to tack onto the wall above my art desk. That’s why I’ve made my Pure Inspiration page. It’s nothing but art that I find inspiring in some way. Take a look, and get inspired!

sarah&braylon      Drogo

Two of my drawings. One of my friend and her son, and Drogo from Game of Thrones. Both graphite pencil.

Definitely don’t miss the Shop ‘Til You Drop page. It’s filled with amazing indie shops. One of my personal goals this year is to buy as many gifts (including gifts for myself!) as I can from indie vendors. There are SO many things to choose from, and who doesn’t love a unique, often customizable gift? As someone who is just venturing into an indie business I can really appreciate the importance of helping out other small businesses.

As for my post content, that’s going to cover a lot. Stories from my life, crafts I make, projects with my little miss, art I make, products I’ve bought and love. . .the list goes on! After I get the wheels greased and things are running smoothly for me, I will eventually be including a Monthly Feature page. This could be an artist, a shop, a blog, a product and have a page up and promoting it for a month. A great way to get the word out about things I find spectacular. Oh, and get used to this little face.

Elliemontage

You’ll be seeing lots of her around here. I tend to be a photoholic when it comes to my daughter. What can I say, she just inspires me!

So thanks for stopping by my blog – stay tuned for some features of things that I love, some serious art inspiration, and I may just need to start up a Fun Fact Friday. Because who doesn’t love useless trivia? I’d be happy to hear any feedback on my blog, or any advice – I’m still learning about the blogging world! Thanks for reading!
